Alan Turing: The Father of Computer Science Britain Tried to Erase

Alan Turing father of computer science is a title that took his own country roughly sixty years to say out loud in public. Not because his work was in question. Because for most of that sixty years, the government he’d helped save from military defeat was simultaneously the government that had prosecuted him, chemically castrated him, and kept the full extent of his wartime achievement classified for so long that most of the people who criminalized him never got to learn what he’d actually done for them.

I’ve written about people on this blog whose credit was delayed, minimized, or handed to someone else — Rosalind Franklin, Lise Meitner, Grace Hopper’s version of a nation’s founding myth attaching itself to the wrong name. Turing’s story is different from all of those in one specific, uncomfortable way. It’s not really a story about credit being misdirected. It’s a story about a government actively punishing the person while, at the exact same time, keeping the reason he most deserved gratitude a state secret. He wasn’t overlooked. He was actively harmed by the same institution whose survival he’d made possible, and it kept the receipts hidden long enough that hardly anyone alive at the time ever got to connect the two facts.

The Machine That Existed Before the Metal

Before Bletchley Park, before Enigma, Turing had already done something that, on its own, would have secured his place in the history of mathematics.

In 1936, at just 23 years old, Turing published a paper addressing an abstract problem in mathematical logic — essentially, whether there could ever exist a general method for determining if any given mathematical statement was provable. To answer it, he did something nobody else had quite done: he described, in precise theoretical detail, an imaginary machine capable of performing any calculation that could be described by a step-by-step procedure, using nothing but a strip of tape, a set of simple rules, and the ability to read, write, and move along that tape one step at a time.

This “Turing machine” wasn’t a physical device. It was a thought experiment, a way of formally defining what “computation” even meant. But in defining it that precisely, Turing had effectively described the theoretical blueprint for every general-purpose computer that would eventually be built — years before anyone had assembled a machine that could actually run one.

I find something genuinely disorienting about the order of operations here, as someone who works with actual, physical computing hardware every day. Usually you build the thing, and the theory describing how it works catches up afterward, refining and correcting itself against what the hardware actually does. Turing did it backward. He worked out the complete theoretical shape of computation as an abstract idea first, on paper, using logic alone — and the hardware spent the next couple of decades catching up to a blueprint he’d already finished. That’s not incremental engineering. That’s describing the destination before anyone else had figured out there was a road to build.


Breaking a Machine That Was Never Supposed to Break

When war broke out in 1939, Turing was recruited to Bletchley Park, Britain’s wartime codebreaking center, to work on cracking Enigma — the encryption machine the German military used to scramble its communications, believed by the Germans themselves to be functionally unbreakable given the astronomical number of possible settings it could be configured with.

Turing led the development of the Bombe, an electromechanical machine built specifically to work through Enigma’s possible configurations at a speed no human team of codebreakers could match, systematically narrowing the search until the day’s specific settings could be recovered. It worked. By some historical estimates, the codebreaking effort Turing was central to shortened the war by roughly two years and saved an estimated 14 million lives, by giving Allied commanders direct visibility into German military communications at critical moments throughout the war.

What strikes me most about this achievement isn’t the codebreaking itself, impressive as it was, but the total, prolonged secrecy that followed it. The full story of what happened at Bletchley Park wasn’t declassified until the 1970s — meaning Turing lived his entire remaining life, and died, without the British public ever knowing what he’d actually contributed. He couldn’t defend his reputation with it. He couldn’t point to it during his prosecution. He couldn’t even really discuss it with the people who loved him. He carried the single most consequential secret of his life in complete silence, for the rest of a life that turned out to be very short, while the government that swore him to that secrecy simultaneously destroyed him for something entirely unrelated.

I try to imagine what it would be like to hold something like that — genuine, verifiable proof that you had helped save your country, in a form you were legally forbidden from ever mentioning — while that same country was actively deciding you didn’t deserve basic legal protection. I don’t think I can actually get there. It’s a specific kind of isolation that doesn’t have an equivalent in most ordinary lives, including mine.


The Prosecution

In January 1952, Turing reported a burglary at his home in Manchester. During the police investigation, details emerged about his relationship with a young man named Arnold Murray. Homosexuality was a criminal offense in Britain at the time, and Turing was charged, along with Murray, with “gross indecency.”

Turing did not deny it. By multiple accounts, he saw no reason to lie about who he was, even understanding what the legal consequences would be. He was convicted in March 1952 and given a choice between imprisonment and a course of hormonal treatment — what was then commonly called chemical castration, involving estrogen injections intended to eliminate libido, administered as a supposedly more lenient alternative to prison. Turing chose the hormone treatment rather than lose a year or more of his working life to incarceration. The treatment left him impotent and caused physical changes, including breast tissue development, that he found deeply humiliating.

The conviction also meant the immediate loss of his security clearance. The man who had been trusted with Britain’s most sensitive wartime cryptographic secrets was, within weeks, formally barred from any further work connected to the intelligence services he’d once been central to. He was also, by multiple accounts, placed under a degree of ongoing police surveillance — treated, from that point forward, as a potential security risk rather than as the person who had helped make British security possible in the first place.

I find myself circling back to a specific detail from accounts of this period: his close friend Peter Hilton later described Turing as bearing the treatment with what Hilton called “amused fortitude” — a phrase that reads, the longer I sit with it, less like genuine equanimity and more like the specific, exhausting performance of composure that people sometimes maintain precisely because the alternative feels unbearable to show anyone. I don’t think I can know, from this distance, what Turing actually felt during that year. I know what the historical record suggests he showed other people, which is not necessarily the same thing.


What Actually Killed Him

On June 8, 1954, Turing’s housekeeper found him dead in his bed. A partially eaten apple sat nearby. The inquest ruled the death a suicide by cyanide poisoning, and for decades, that ruling was treated as settled fact — reinforced by a tidy, almost literary detail that made the story feel complete: brilliant, persecuted mathematician, driven to poison an apple in an echo of Snow White, a story he was known to have loved as a child.

Here’s what I didn’t expect to find, going into this research: that neat narrative has been seriously challenged by historians and biographers examining the actual inquest record. The apple itself was never tested for cyanide. No suicide note was found. Turing had, by multiple accounts, been in reasonably good spirits in the weeks before his death, making forward-looking plans rather than exhibiting the kind of behavior typically associated with someone preparing to end their life. And critically, Turing kept a small home chemistry laboratory, where he was known to conduct experiments involving cyanide compounds for unrelated research purposes, in a poorly ventilated space adjoining his bedroom.

Andrew Hodges, Turing’s most prominent biographer, and other researchers examining the case have pointed out that accidental poisoning through inhaled cyanide fumes from his own lab work is at least as consistent with the physical evidence as suicide is — and that the original coroner’s finding, made quickly and without any established motive presented at the inquest itself, may have reflected the assumptions of the era more than a rigorous examination of the facts. A gay man, recently convicted, subjected to hormone treatment — in 1954, that biography alone may have been enough to make “suicide” feel like the obvious, unquestioned explanation to an inquest that didn’t look terribly hard for alternatives.

I don’t think I can tell you, with confidence, which version is true. Nobody can, at this point — the physical evidence that might have settled it definitively was never properly preserved. But I find the existence of this uncertainty itself worth sitting with. Even the cause of his death got quietly simplified into a clean, symbolically satisfying narrative, the same way so much of his actual work got simplified or hidden while he was alive. The convenient story arrived quickly. The complicated, less certain truth took decades of careful archival work to even become a serious competing possibility.


Sixty Years to Say Sorry

The formal reckoning, when it eventually came, arrived in painfully slow stages, each one lagging embarrassingly far behind the last.

The Bletchley Park story wasn’t declassified until the 1970s, roughly two decades after Turing’s death — meaning an entire generation of British citizens who had lived through the war Turing helped shorten went their whole lives without knowing his name in that context at all. Public awareness of Turing’s full biography — codebreaker, founder of theoretical computer science, and persecuted gay man — really only reached a wide audience decades later still, significantly accelerated by the 2014 film The Imitation Game.

In 2009, following a public petition, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued a formal apology on behalf of the government for what he called “the appalling way he was treated.” In 2013, Queen Elizabeth II granted Turing a posthumous royal pardon — a genuinely unusual gesture, since royal pardons are typically reserved for cases involving wrongful conviction, not for retroactively deciding that a correctly-applied law of the time had itself been unjust. In 2017, the “Alan Turing law” extended posthumous pardons more broadly to other men convicted under the same now-abolished legislation.

I notice something uncomfortable every time I read through that sequence of dates. Each step was, on its own terms, a genuine and meaningful acknowledgment. Taken together, they also describe an institution moving as slowly as it possibly could toward admitting something that should have been obvious in real time — dragged forward, step by incremental step, mostly by public pressure rather than by any internal reckoning that happened on its own schedule. The apology came fifty-five years after his death. The pardon came fifty-nine years after. Turing received none of it. The acknowledgment was real. It just arrived for everyone except the person who’d actually needed it.


A Thought to Leave You With

What I keep returning to, writing about Turing, is the specific cruelty of the timing — not just that he was persecuted, but that the persecution and the secrecy operated on completely separate schedules, controlled by the same institution, in ways that made it impossible for either one to soften the other while he was alive.

If the Enigma work had been public in 1952, would the prosecution have gone differently? I genuinely don’t know, and I’m wary of assuming it would have, given how thoroughly the law of the time was applied regardless of a person’s other contributions. But the fact that the question is even unanswerable — that his country classified the exact evidence that might have complicated its treatment of him, then used a completely separate set of laws to destroy him anyway — sits somewhere I haven’t fully been able to resolve, even after spending a long time with this story.

I think about the phrase “father of computer science” a lot, now, and about how strange it is that a title this foundational took sixty years for its own country to say plainly and officially. Not because anyone seriously doubted the science. Because saying it plainly would have meant admitting, in the same breath, exactly what that country had done to the person who earned it. Sometimes the delay in giving someone credit isn’t really about uncertainty over whether they deserve it. It’s about what admitting it would force everyone else to admit alongside it.

Turing died at 41, having built the theoretical foundation for the device you’re reading this on, having helped end a war two years early, having kept a secret that could have changed how his own trial unfolded, and having never once, in his own lifetime, been allowed to hear his country call him what it now calls him constantly. The machine he imagined on paper in 1936 is still running, everywhere, all the time. It just took the country that built its future on his idea a very long time to say his name without flinching.
